Organisers of University of Huddersfield’s 2018 Freshers’ Festival are preparing for their biggest diary of events yet – with the widest range of music to suit its diverse student population.

As thousands get set to head to the town for university this month, Huddersfield Students’ Union has been putting together its final preparations for a week of entertainment ahead of the new term.

Its seven-day calendar of events include staging a comedy evening including stand-up star, Phil Wang, basketball and netball matches, a gospel concert, garden tea party, silent disco, cinema club, a ‘throwback’ school party with British rapper Tinchy Stryder, and a ‘super funk’ roller disco, before leading up to the Students’ Union’s ‘HudLive’ music festival which includes British rapper, Avelino, and chart-topping act Kimberly Wyatt, from the Pussycat Dolls.

HudLive will take place in the town centre for the first time to make it more accessible to the large number of local and commuter students after the Students’ Union has successfully partnered with five different venues to host its popular evening of live, eclectic music.

Taking place at The Zetland, Five Bar, Tokyo, Camel Club and Byram Arcade in the town, HudLive will be open to both residents and students and showcase an array of music which includes an unforgettable set from British DJ, Charlie Sloth.

Tom Bowden, Community Officer for Huddersfield Students’ Union, said they had been working with Kirklees Council and partners to grow the music scene in the town and further cater for its multi-cultural population’s wide range of music tastes.

“We are putting our stamp on the town by working with more partners, such as Radio Sangam to broaden our musical range, build a community and create a welcoming, vibrant town,” he said.

“It’s not just for students either, with our diverse range of music across Huddersfield, we wanted to hold events which reflected that and appealed to all tastes.

“Our student body alone is made up of over 130 nationalities and we want to create a community for everyone to enjoy – and one way to bring people together is through music.”

Huddersfield Students’ Union’s 2018 Freshers’ Festival begins on Monday, September 17th, from 10am with its popular Fresher’s Fair in University Square.

The week of activity concludes on Sunday, September 23rd, with a ‘HudQuiz’ in The Zetland, in Queensgate.
