Small Seeds, a bar in Huddersfield, is expanding on the events it offers to cater for demand – from hosting science seminars to yoga.
Small Seeds is well-known for hosting bespoke gigs and independent events, such as the free ‘Friday Night Jive’ funk, soul and jazz evenings, and Huddersfield’s longest open mic night, ‘The Acoustic Club’ – which celebrates its 18th birthday on September 25th.
However, organisers at the venue have been exploring other avenues alongside live music to stage such as weekly Vinyasa Yoga Classes, film previews, art exhibitions and installations, and poetry and spoken word evenings.
This academic year will also see the return of Café Scientifique Huddersfield which invites guest speakers, such as quantum physicist Professor Bob Cywinski, to host monthly science seminars – with the first event being held on September 24th, from 6.30pm.
Noah Burton, manager of Small Seeds, added: “Café Scientifique is a wonderful event, exploring fascinating topics related to science and nature. It is very popular and we are very pleased to be hosting it for another year.
“It’s one of many events we were keen to bring back because they were so popular with our customers. We want to be able to offer people something different too so it’s an exciting time to be part of a venue that is not afraid to explore other alternatives to enjoy and take part in, which complement our live music events.”
Another big event is happening in the town this month too, which Small Seeds is now preparing to stage the finale for – the 2018 Onwards Festival.
Now in its third year, Onwards Festival is a music event which moves through multiple Huddersfield bars in succession – with the 2018 event showcasing eight performances across five venues.
Taking place on September 29th, ‘Louis Louis Louis’ – a classic jump blues band – will kick-start the Festival at Magic Rock Tap, in Willow Lane, from 1pm.
Later that day sees The Corner, in Market Walk, host singer-songwriter, ‘Dan Walters’, and psychedelic punk trio ‘Don Gonzo’, from 3.30pm, before Café Ollo, in Northumberland Street, showcases soul-funk band ‘Mamilah’ from 5pm.
Heading into the evening, electronic reggae group, ‘Easy Stride Band’, and funky indie group, ‘Happy Daggers’, will take to the stage from 8.30pm at Northern Quarter, in Wood Street.
Then, Small Seeds itself will home nine-piece ska band, ‘Pepperjam’, and eclectic DJs, ‘Chicken Scratch’, from 10pm to conclude an action-packed event of musical talent.
Tickets for the Onwards Festival are priced at £15 (for all five events). Individual events can be attended by paying £5 on the door.
“People are switching on to the fact that Huddersfield can put big gigs on as well as city venues across Manchester and Leeds,” said Noah.
“Onwards Festival celebrates local talent and that’s something we want to continue. The whole festival is made up of bands all formed, developed or established in Huddersfield and Yorkshire.
“There’s a tonne of talent in Huddersfield and it’s great to join other venues to collaborate and hold events which showcase such amazing musicians.
“This town has a massive student influence and we want to hold events they are interested in at a venue they enjoy coming to and experiencing new things.
